It was our honour to welcome Mr. Vic Alhadeff to our second Leichhardt Luminaries event yesterday, talking to us about the Keep NSW Safe campaign.
Led by Mr. Alhadeff and the Jewish Board of Deputies, Keep NSW Safe is a coalition of communities which have come together to call for change to the state’s race-hate legislation. The coalition asks the NSW Parliament to act to change the law to protect communities from the promotion of violence specifically.
The coalition is made up of 29 community organisations and two prominent community leaders, making this a whole of community issue.
The coalition argues that the current law does not deter violence against Australians on the basis of their race, colour, descent or national, ethnic or ethno-religious origin. Mr. Alhadeff stressed that the government needs to take action to address this issue which affects and concerns us all.
Cultural Perspectives Group staff were deeply engaged by the passion that Mr. Alhadeff has for this issue and the leadership he has shown.
Vic Alhadeff is Chief Executive Officer of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies. He is former editor of the Australian Jewish News and a former chief sub-editor of The Cape Times. He is also the author of two books on South African history.
