Museums and Galleries are unsurprisingly the best place to go to experience cultural diversity. The Beyond Words - Calligraphic Traditions in Asia exhibition at the Art Gallery NSW provides you with a great opportunity to see the beauty of a range of hand-writings and scripts, feel the visual power of written languages, and explore the cultural and religious contexts behind these writing traditions.
From the ancient to the contemporary, this free exhibition showcases a vast diversity of calligraphic arts across Asian countries and cultures including Chinese, Japanese, and Islamic culture. Two interactive workshops are fun for kids: one uses Persian strokes to draw animals and the other teaches kids how to hold the brush to do Chinese calligraphy.
Even if you don’t understand a foreign language, it’s always fascinating to see different languages recorded throughout the history that reflect cultures and traditions beyond words.
