The Sri Lanka Food and Culture Festival will be held at Darling Harbour over this weekend. Hosted by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, this festival is a feast for the senses, with something for everyone – from traditional handicraft stores and live performances, to the endless tea and tantalising food, and stacks of holiday giveaways too.

According to the 2016 Census, there are about 109,846 people living in Australia who were born in Sri Lanka, with Victoria has the largest population (over 55,000) followed by NSW (over 28,000).

Here is a snapshot of the Sri Lankan culture:

· Sri Lanka is a spice island. With its rich melting pot of cuisines, Sri Lanka’s iconic food has been influenced by an array of international cultures including the Dutch, Portuguese, Moors, Arabs, Malays, Indians, and English.

· Tea is serious business in Sri Lanka, famous for producing the finest black tea in the world.

· Sri Lanka boasts over 2000 years of culture, with its ancient temple sites, colonial fortresses, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

· Cricket is the most popular sport in Sri Lanka.

· Sri Lankans have three official languages: Sinhala, Tamil and English.
