Pledge to Drop the Jargon Today!

It’s the Drop the Jargon Day today! It is a day for professionals in Australian health, community services and local government to use plain English instead of work/industry related jargons.

I remember the days not that long ago when I was confused to hear words like “LGA” and my patient colleagues explained to me that it meant Local Government Areas and it’s a government administration under state and federal level of administration in Australia.

Many people have trouble understanding the information provided by organisations, particularly in the healthcare area. It’s even more so for people from culturally and linguistically diverse background. When communicating with them, jargon including technical terms and acronyms should be avoided. Statistics show that 60% of people in Australia have low health literacy.
