Diwali celebrations in NSW commences from this weekend with a Deepavali Fair at Rouse Hill Town Centre this Saturday 7 October. There will be a second celebration at Martin Place on 12 October and a weekend festive spectacular in Paramatta Park on 14 and 15 October.
Diwali or Deepavali, the Hindi festival of lights, is officially on 19th October this year. It is one of the most popular festivals for the Hindu community and spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair.
Due to the large size of the Indian community in Australia, Diwali is widely celebrated across the country. The Australian Bureau of Statistics 2016 shows that the Indian community is the second largest ethnic community in Australia, with its totally population of 455,375, and 440,303 people who identified as Hindu in the Census.
