Cultural Awareness training
Issue:
Cancer Institute of NSW requested a one-day cultural awareness training to be delivered to members of the Cancer Institute NSW Multicultural Working Group.
The premise being, to provide an interactive and hands on approach to cultural awareness training for staff working at Cancer Institute NSW to deliver a segue for the Multicultural Working Group to understand the lived experience of CALD communities, and provide the staff with the opportunity to meet influential community leaders who could play an important role in future campaigns.
Solution:
DiverseWerks proposed that participants visit approximately 5 LGAs in Sydney throughout the day, in particular the Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, Arabic and refugee communities. The training provided a general overview of CALD community demographics, structures, and migration/settlement history in NSW, with a focus on the different community groups.
We also developed and disseminated a take home information package on the demographics of the communities and LGAs visited on the day, so the information could be utilised within the institute for staff members who did not participate in the field trip.
Results:
Participants noted the substantial value gained from the cultural awareness training, and from the community leaders they spoke to on the day.
